Birthstones Chart

Traditionally, a birthstone is associated with each month of the year. For example, the birthstone for January is a garnet, while lucky babies born in April get a diamond as their birthstone.

The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The current list dates back to 1912 with only one addition since then – the tanzanite was added to December.

There are numerous legends and myths about birthstone healing powers and their therapeutic influence. According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. For the full effect, individuals needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

The gemstones featured below are arranged by month.  Scroll down below to see your birthstone and the mystical lore that is associated with it.

Natural Amethyst Quartz

AMETHYST

Gemstone lore, history and legend

The word Amethyst is derived from the Greek words for “not drunken” and was once thought that amethyst would ward off drunkenness. Ancient cups and goblets often contained or were carved completely from amethyst for that reason. Also amethyst was once considered a protective gemstone against death, dismay, mayhem and evil spirits.  Some consider it a symbol of calmness. Soldiers often brought them into battle. Many religious leaders wear the traditional large amethyst rings, such as bishop and cardinals. This beautiful purple gemstone has long been a royalty favorite and their use for royal jewelry dates back to ancient times. There are many amethyst gemstones in the Royal Crown’s jewelry.

Composition, source and jewelry variety

The amethyst is in the quartz family and ranges in color from a rich violet to a pale lavender. The intense violet colors are more sought after for jewelry and collections.  Amethyst is found all over the world, but jewelry grade quartz is mostly mined from Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia. The most sought after rich violet variety of Amethyst is mined in Siberia. Most Jewelry Amethysts are heat treated to enhance their hue & color.

Aquamarine March Birthstone

March Birthstone: Aquamarine

The blue of Aquamarine is divine and eternal, mirroring the light blue sky and of the deep blue ocean. This, no doubt, is where it derives its name from. ”Aquamarine” comes  from the Latin word  for water (aqua) and for sea (mare).  Legend states that sailors have long regarded aquamarine as their lucky stone, believing it would prevent seasickness, ensure a safe voyage and guarantee a prosperous return.

Ancient Romans believed  the Aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, “The God Of The Sea,” having fallen from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore.  Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea.

This connection to water led to the belief that the Aquamarine was  powerful when immersed.  Water that had this mystical gemstone  submerged in it was thought in ancient times to heal a variety of illnesses  such as the heart, liver, stomach, mouth and throat ailments.  Aquamarines were also thought to reverse poisoning and to aid in fortune telling.

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from an almost colorless pale blue to blue-green or teal. The most prized color is a deep-blue aqua color. It is 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

DIAMONDS: April’s Birthstone

Posted by Perry Lewin | Birthstones | Friday 1 April 2011 1:01 am

DIAMOND: APRIL BIRTHSTONE

April’s birthstone is remarkably simple in composition, yet stunning in its unique ability to reflect and refract light into vivid flashes of brilliant color.  Ancient cultures called the diamond “Vajra,” which means lightening.  Early myth says this both because of the rays of light thrown off by this gem,  as well as its unyielding strength.  The Diamond is the hardest known substance in the world.

Diamonds have been coveted throughout ancient & modern history.  Diamonds have long been used to adorn such items as crowns, swords and emblems and, of course, jewelry   Queen Victoria declared the celebration of her 50th year of reign a “Diamond Jubilee.”  Diamonds have been thought to possess mystical medicinal properties by ancient cultures.  During the middle ages diamonds were thought to heal illness, but only if the ailing person took the diamond to bed at night.

Formed deep within the earth under intense heat and pressure, diamonds are simply crystallized carbon.  Centuries of volcanic activity has brought these gemstones to the earth’s surface, where they are found either within volcanic rock formations or embedded into rivers in “alluvial deposits.”  India is thought to be the first river-bed source of Diamond mining, but today these gemstones are found primarily in Australia, the Soviet Union, and Africa.  Some diamonds are found in the United States, mainly in Arkansas, but typically they are of low quality and color.

In its uncut, raw form, a diamond is no more noticeable than most pebbles.  A diamond’s true beauty comes to life after being properly cut.  This fact  was not revealed until the 16th century, when gemstone cutting and polishing techniques were perfected.    A gift of a diamond is symbolic of everlasting love between newly weds and couples seeking marriage.  One cannot find a more convincing  promise of enduring love than the brilliant beauty of a diamond.  This gemstone  has endured love, nobility, strive and lore for centuries.  It has created wealth and destroyed lives with its mystical lore and never-ending fascination of the people that covet it
