Aquamarine March Birthstone

March Birthstone: Aquamarine
The blue of Aquamarine is divine and eternal, mirroring the light blue sky and of the deep blue ocean. This, no doubt, is where it derives its name from. ”Aquamarine” comes from the Latin word for water (aqua) and for sea (mare). Legend states that sailors have long regarded aquamarine as their lucky stone, believing it would prevent seasickness, ensure a safe voyage and guarantee a prosperous return.
Ancient Romans believed the Aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, “The God Of The Sea,” having fallen from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore. Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea.
This connection to water led to the belief that the Aquamarine was powerful when immersed. Water that had this mystical gemstone submerged in it was thought in ancient times to heal a variety of illnesses such as the heart, liver, stomach, mouth and throat ailments. Aquamarines were also thought to reverse poisoning and to aid in fortune telling.
Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from an almost colorless pale blue to blue-green or teal. The most prized color is a deep-blue aqua color. It is 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
